Accidentally stumbling into the Tardis when her Aunt Vanessa was killed by the Master's Tissue Compression Eliminator, Tegan Jovanka, an air stewardess from Brisbane, Australia, joined the Tardis' crew in 1981. She wore an official uniform of Air Australia, in the colours of lilac and lavender, her hair was cut short, as was the style in 1981, and her attitude as feminist and politically correct as people were in her time. Her later outfits were often the victim of fashion trends of the eighties. She had good intentions, even if her mouthiness kept her from showing it. Tegan was played by Janet Fielding.
Tegan was loud, obstinate, and pushy. She grated on the Doctor's nerves as much as he
grated on hers.
She always had an objection about where they were going, what they were doing,
and she was usually correct that they should have left instead of meddling. She bickered with
Adric, teasing him about eating too much or bossing him about. She got angry at the Time Lord
for not being able to steer the Tardis to return her to her home, but, when the time came to
leave, found that the idea of leaving was tougher to swallow than she thought it would be. She
found herself indebted to the Time Lord for her life on several occasions, and made her
gratitude known to him, unabashedly. She stayed on board the Tardis until the Daleks arrived in
1984 in London, and she left the Tardis crew, disgusted with all the senseless
violence the Doctor seemed to attract, however unwittingly. 'Brave heart, Tegan.'
